Officials Pronounce the 2008 Senior Nationals a Great Success
Posted 11 May 2008
The 2008 Senior Nationals at Runaway Bay on the Gold Coast in April/May 2008 were a great success from the point of view of the officials participating. Visiting officials presided over the final game with New South Wales winning against Victoria. The officials were Tony Martin (Vic), Stephen Bowness (New Zealand), John Frame (Vic), David Lee (New Zealand), Phil Clark (UK) and Paul Mercer (Vic).
This is the first time that we have had such a good representation of officials from other countries working together in the Senior Nationals and it was a valuable experience for all concerned.
It was decided that officials from the same State as competitors were eligible to manage the semi-finals, which allowed Richard Prater (Qld), Ken Parker (Qld), Tim Redshaw (Qld), Paul Taylor (ACT), Mark Vanselow (Vic) and Barbara Johnson (Qld) to work together for the Queensland versus Western Australia game which was won by WA.
Further reflections and other written or electronically recorded contributions from participating officials and other interested parties are welcome as additions to the website.
Panel announced for 2008 Senior Nationals
Posted 6 January, 2008
AGOA Operations Manager, Paul Mercer, announced the Panel for the 2008 event.
The 12 officials appointed were:
Stephen Bowness (NZ)
John Frame (Vic)
Barbara Johnson (Qld)
David Lee (NZ)
Tony Martin (Vic)
Paul Mercer (Vic)
Marcus Misters (Qld)
Darrin Mitchell (NSW)
Ken Parker (Qld)
Richard Prater (Qld)
Tim Redshaw (Qld)
Mark Vanselow (Vic)
Two other officials, Phil Clarke (UK) and Paul Taylor (ACT) were placed on the Stand-by list.
This represented the first time that our colleagues in New Zealand were appointed to the Panel for a Senior National Championships. We welcomed two of their most experienced officials, Stephen Bowness and David Lee, and enjoyed working with them.
For Darrin Mitchell, Ken Parker and Mark Vanselow this was their first taste of officiating at this level and they each acquitted themselves very well indeed.

AUSTRALIAN OUTBACK DEVELOPMENT TOUR TO THE U.S.A.
Posted - 14 March 2007
The Australian National Team (the Outback) will be touring the United States later this year, and officals have been invited to join the tour.
The purpose of the tour is to give players, administrators and officials the opportunity to develop their skills in the home of American Football, and is also designed to give the Australian gridiron community an opportunity for international travel in lieu of the Australian team missing out on the 2007 World Cup.
The tour dates are from 26 August to 11 September inclusive. The tour will include visits to Utah and Los Angeles. The Australian team will play 3 games - a warmup scrimmage against a semi-pro team in Utah, a game against Snow Junior College in Utah, and a game against a semi-pro team in Los Angeles. Officials in the touring party will be given the opportunity to officiate in these games alongside U.S. officials. It is also hoped to arrange clinics with college officials for touring Australian officials.
Other highlights will include tours of college training facilities and attendance at two Brigham Young University games.
More details about the tour can be obtained from Paul Manera (pmanera@optusnet.com.au), Australian Coach and organiser of the tour. In additiona, if you are interested, please contact Tony Martin, AGOA President (tony-martin@telstra.com), so that AGOA can best organise our representation on the tour.
Please consider taking advantage of this excellent opportunity for professional development.

This ensured that each official on the panel worked at least one game on each game day. If there were less than 8 officials nominating then the opportunity existed to work more games.
A game fee will be paid (amount to be advised once numbers are finalized) and participating officials were responsible for their own travel and accommodation arrangements and costs. GA was able to provide accommodation at the same venue as the teams.

Australian Officials attend Arena Football training camp in Hawaii
AGOA was invited by Gridiron Australia to send officials to participate in the inaugural Arena Football Pacific Rim Training Camp held in Honolulu, Hawaii from 4th – 10th February 2002.
Arena Football is the indoor version of the game played by teams of 8-a-side on a 50-yard field. The game is fast, high scoring and all-action.
Gridiron Australia also sent a party comprising players, coaches and administrators as part of Arena Football’s international development program. The Australian party was the largest from the region, which was also represented by Japan, NZ, Fiji, Tonga and Samoa. Australia was the only country to send officials, taking a party of six officials representing three states.
Participating officials were Andrew Calverley (Qld), David Mayne, Mike Orchard and Miles Newman (NSW), Paul Mercer and Tony Martin (Vic)
The officials were instructed and mentored by Wesley “Buddy” Ward. Buddy is the Supervisor of Officials for Arena Football and works directly for the NFL Supervisor of Officials (also an ex-Arena Supervisor of Officials) at their offices in New York. He is a senior AFL Referee and has refereed a number of Arena Bowls. Being a former Big East NCAA Division 1 Referee, he specializes in the supervision of the referee position.
After spending the first three days studying a rule book and watching game tapes it was time for a taste of the real thing as all the participants got to try out the new concept with some on-field scrimmages.
There was time for some tours, with visits to the NFL Experience and the Pro-Bowl and individual sightseeing with some of the group visiting Pearl Harbour. Snorkeling, boogie-boarding, bush-walking, shopping or just relaxing on the beach were also very popular!
On the final day there was a round-robin competition between all the teams with the officials taking turns to work at each position in a 5-man crew. There was also the opportunity to work with some US officials including Matt Sumstine (see photo) who had just been hired to work in the new Arena II competition and probably knew less about the rules than the Aussies!
All officials performed creditably during the camp. Buddy, the Arena staff and coaches were pleasantly surprised with our capabilities. The main differences between the US officials and us were:
- Our speed of execution
- Our tendency to find too many and pedantic penalties
- Our lack of exposure to high profile / pressure games
- Our lack of experienced mentors
The trip was a great success for all participants. It was a fantastic opportunity to work with a high-caliber official and benefit from his experience and knowledge and it is not often that you get the opportunity to work games in such beautiful surroundings!
